Analysis of Lesson 50: Jehovah Defends Jehoshaphat From His Enemies

What actions did King Jehoshaphat take?

Jehoshaphat removed the altars of the god Baal and the idols from Judah. He wanted the people to become familiar with Jehovah’s laws, so he sent princes and Levites throughout the land to teach them. Before the battle, he gathered the people—men, women, and children—to pray to Jehovah. He also appointed singers to go ahead of the army, praising Jehovah as they marched toward the battlefield.

How did Jehovah protect the people of Judah?

Jehoshaphat acknowledged that he needed Jehovah’s help, so he prayed: “Jehovah, without you we cannot win this battle. Please tell us what we should do.” Jehovah heard his prayer and replied: “Do not be afraid; I will help you. Take your positions, stand still, and see how I will save you.”

Jehovah protected the people of Judah by causing confusion among the Ammonite and Moabite armies, leading them to fight against one another. He rescued the people of Judah—including soldiers and priests—without any direct human intervention. In this way, he showed that he defends his people from their enemies.

What does this account teach us about Jehovah?

This account teaches us that Jehovah listens to the prayers of his people and answers them, that he can save and protect in unexpected ways, and that he fights for his people without relying on human strength. His support also inspires respect and fear among the surrounding nations.

What practical lessons can we learn?

We learn to trust in Jehovah and turn to him in prayer when facing problems, recognizing that his help is far greater than any human effort. We also learn that praising and obeying Jehovah strengthens our faith and sense of security, and that teaching and promoting Jehovah’s laws helps the community remain faithful.

Introduction to Section 9

In this section, we will see how faith in Jehovah can provide courage, protection, and guidance in difficult situations. Through examples involving children, prophets, and kings, we will learn that fully trusting in Jehovah always brings good results. His servants showed outstanding faith by relying on him for help, protection, and direction, and their experiences teach us that Jehovah rewards those who trust in him with all their heart.

Analysis of Lesson 51: The Warrior and the Little Girl

Do you think it was easy for the Israelite girl to speak to Naaman’s wife?

No, it likely was not easy. The Israelite girl was far from her home and family and served the wife of an army commander named Naaman. She worshipped Jehovah and lived among people who did not. Even so, she spoke up because she wanted to help Naaman and knew that Jehovah could do so through the prophet Elisha.

What do you think helped her to be so brave?

Her faith and trust in Jehovah gave her courage. She was convinced that Jehovah could heal Naaman through the prophet Elisha, and her love for Jehovah and for others motivated her to speak.

What does this account teach us about Jehovah?

This account teaches us that Jehovah can use humble individuals to accomplish great things. He listens to those who trust in him and has the power to heal and help, regardless of a person’s status or background.

What practical lessons can we learn?

We learn that we can rely on Jehovah even in difficult circumstances and should not be afraid to speak about him to others. Jehovah blesses faith and obedience, even when the instructions seem simple. Humility and obedience can lead to great blessings.
